Opera Bohemia: Church Bell Tolls for ‘Suor Angelica’ by Puccini
Summer Gala (1)
Opera Bohemia, Scotland’s professional touring company, joins forces with Amicus Orchestra, to present Puccini’s heart rending ‘Suor Angelica’.
It has been seven years since Sister Angelica gave birth to a child out of wedlock and was forced by her family to join a convent.
Her aunt, a Princess, visits with news that leads to a tragic turn of events. This is one of Puccini’s most deeply emotional operas; be sure to bring your tissues!
Directed by Douglas Nairne and designed by Alisa Kalyanova, this touching new production will draw in the sacred atmosphere of selected venues in Glasgow, Perth and Rothesay. A stellar cast is led by South African soprano Sarah-Jane Brandon, whose career has seen her perform leading roles at Glyndebourne, ENO, and across Europe. The cast also includes Scottish soprano Monica McGhee (who starred as Tosca for Opera Bohemia), and former Scottish Opera Emerging Artists Louise Collett and Sioned Gwen Davies, who represented Wales at the 2017 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World.
Alistair Digges conducts Puccini’s sensitive and moving score, which includes the famous aria ‘Senza Mamma’.
